Question: My son is 12, almost 13yrs old. He states he has been having symptoms of headaches, ringing in the ears, sees "black spots" sometimes, nauseated but no vomiting and last two nights nose bleeds. Can you help as to what might be going on.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The symptoms point towards a sinusitis. The headache, ringing in the ears (eustachian tube dysfunction) seeing black spots, nausea (post nasal drip), nose bleeds (dryness/infection).

2. Get his ears examined and get his audiometry tests (pure tone and impedance) done. A plain Sinus CT will be required. He is old enough to allow a nasal endoscopy. An eye check-up and blood (to look for clotting problems/ infection) tests are recommended.

3. If the nasal bleed is minimal, saline nasal drops and medication for the sinusitis will be adequate. You will require a prescription form a local doctor. Direct examination will help rule out rare causes.

4. You may follow up with these test results here.

I hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
