What Causes Hearing Pulse And Heart Sounds?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Sep 2015
Question: When I get up in the morning and when I stand up after lying some time, for the the first 10 seconds I can hear my hear beat, my ears feel muffled and my heartbeat sounds like it's muffled too. Then it stabilises.
Also on occasion when I bend over there is a big pressure in my head and sometimes my nose. As if lots of fluid running there. This is more occasional whereas the ear thing seems more often. I had glue ear a few months ago, it started when I could hear swishing at night as I lay my head on my pillow and could hear my heartbeat. I took some tablet given by the doctor, the swishing got better but could still hear the heartbeat so he gave me some drops but that never seemed to improve much. I've been the doctor a couple of times but he don't seem too concerned but it worries me still as he hasn't explained anything. I'm a young female and have a low BP. I don't feel dizzy with these spells though. Thanks for your help. XXXX

Brief Answer:
Normal event under stress; blood pressure changes in a day

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Ms/Mrs XXXX. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I am Dr. Meriton. I understand your concern and I wıll try to address it.

In people with ear problems, whether their hearing is diminished or not, they can experience hearing their pulse and heart sounds, since there is an artery that follows its route right under the outer ear. My suggestion is that there is nothing to worry about. Although, I am keen to recommend you to see your otorhinolaringologist (ENT doctor) again, and to further evaluate the ear condition. In every stressful situation, heart beats harder and/or heart rate goes up. I am telling you this extension, because I can understand that these episodes come with a little stress to you and, normally, worry you. Just keep in mind that it happens almost to anybody under stress.

Normal blood pressure is 100-139/60-89 mmHg (systolic over diastolic). Sometimes, a systolic blood pressure down to 90 mmHg, that does not produce any symptoms as you mentioned above, can be considered normal, especially in women. Also, keep in mind that measuring the blood pressure once is not a very reliable factor, because blood pressure can change a lot of times a day, as a result of normal physiological, hormonal and psychological events.

I hope I was helpful with my answer. Should you have follow-up questions, I would be happy to help you. If you do not have further clarifications, I kindly ask you to close the discussion and rate the answer.

Wish you a good health and best regards,
Dr. Meriton
