Posted on Mon, 7 Dec 2015
Question: My boy child, 20 days old, has been suggested an ECHO procedure by the Pediatrician.
The observation from the Pediatrician was the appreciation of the murmurs while examining his heart beat.
i would want to understand if this is a common symptom among the new borns or this needs further investigation?

Brief Answer:
Yes its common and the 2decho is a simple way to rule out any doubts aboutt

Detailed Answer:
Hello , I am Dr. Mody and I would be addressing your concern .

Murmurs may be physiological, I mean to say one in every 4 murmurs may have some pathology , the other three would be having completely normal heart , hence called innocent murmurs. The probability also depends on what site the doctor heard the murmur and what is the characteristic of the murmur , based on this suspicion an echocardiography is ordered to rule out congenital heart disease .

Also if the baby has feeding difficulty, not gaining weight , respiratory infections , becomes blue while she / he cries , a underlying heart issue should be ruled out .

However I would like to reassure you that in present era pediatrician wants to be extra sure about the smallest doubts and so I get more and more normal babies for screening .

Echocardiography is non invasive test with no harm to baby done , it's practically sonography of baby's heart , something you must have tone through in ante natal period , so you may go ahead with it .
