What Causes Heart Palpitations And Black Stool While Taking Prednisone?
Question: I have been taking prenidsone 40 mg a day for Bell Palsy for 3 weeks now and since yesterday i started feeling a rapid heart beat and seen black stool...is this suposs to happen while taking this medication?...thanks..I am 53...5'8 ...190 pounds...thaks

I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.
'Melena' or black stool indicates upper gastrointestinal(origin from esophagus,stomach or duodenum 1st part) bleeding a few days back. Reiterating the fact, it indicates bleeding a few days back not active bleed.
You probably did not take proton pump inhibitors like pantoprazole along with prednisolone and that's why prednisolone resulted in severe gastritis or mild gastric ulceration causing bleeding which is now resulting in your black stools. If it would have been active bleeding, the blood mixed in stool would have been bright red.
So, its not a major cause of concern here as there is no ongoing bleeding. Please start taking tab.pantoprazole 40 mg twice a day empty stomach for 7 days. If your black stool does not improve within 5 days.Please consult a gastroenterologist. PLEASE TAKE MEDICINES UNDER A PHYSICIAN'S GUIDANCE.
Rapid heart bleed is secondary to bleed that has happened and will improve in 3-4 days.
Please be reassured but observant.
