What Causes Heavy Bleeding After Surgical Abortion?

default
Posted on Tue, 15 Jul 2014
Question: My wife went through a surgical termination of pregnancy 10 days back. She had very little spotting for 3 days. Day 3-5 were slightly heavy (not heavy but more than spotting) after which the bleeding stopped. Since yesterday morning , she has had bleeding once again. This time it is heavy like a period. Normally, she changes a pad twice in the night and she had to do the same last night. She is intermittently passing small blood clots having cramps like period cramps. There is no sign of any other discharge or fever. We are travelling right now and so do not have access to the hospital where she underwent the procedure. These are my questions-

1.Is this something we need to worry about?
2. Is this a regular period?
3. Can she use tampons as she is more used to it.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

1) This might be an incomplete surgical evacuation so she must be passing the left over bits of the pregnancy.

If she is not bleeding very heavily and if it just like periods then do nt worry. She will bleed for few more days till it is completely removed.

This i am saying in the context that you are travelling. I will advice a check up in the hospital as soon as you come back.

Also if the bleeding becomes very heavy or does not stop after 5 more days then get her to hospital wherever you are.

2) This is NOT a regular period . periods come at least 1 month after termination.

3) NO , tampons will cause infection in such a scenario and will not allow the incomplete fetal fragments to come out. Only pads are safe.
