Posted on Sat, 19 Mar 2016
Question: I am a 59 year old female on warfarin. I have had a hysterectomy some time ago but left the ovaries. Tonight around 9:00 I started bleeding heavily from vagina with some clotting. I had a couple whiskey's tonight as well as 2 helpings of salad. Don't know whether I should go to emergency with this issue.

Brief Answer:
vaginal bleeding

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
The fact that you were operated recently for hysterectomy and possibly the vaginal cuff would not have healed completely and further you being on warfarin may have caused some old collected blood or fresh bleeding to be initiated.
Using warfarin together with ethanol can cause you to bleed more easily. If you take warfarin you should avoid large amounts of alcohol, but moderate consumption (one to two drinks per day) are not likely to affect the response to warfarin if you have normal liver function.
However it would be best to report to the ER and get an urgent per speculum exam and an ultrasound pelvis done to localise the cause of bleeding to address it sooner.
