What Causes Hiccups Post Total Hip Replacement Surgery?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Question: I had total hip replacement surgery 7 weeks ago. It went very well. However, I get daily "bouts" of hiccups just about every day, that last only a few minutes. I did not have this issue prior to surgery and am concerned that it may be something serious, like indicative of a blood clot or heart issue. I am a 50 year old female, pretty healthy, had a spinal for anesthesia, and was on Warfarin for 4 weeks post purgery. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Hiccough can be a drug reaction

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case and I can assure you that this is not due to blood clot or heart issue. Spinal anesthesia is also not a cause of this .Most common causes for continuous hiccough is due to either a drug reaction or retention of carbon di oxide in body. Other common cause is high level of urea in the body. I would suggest you following.
1. Get blood urea and blood gases check up.
2. Avoid drugs which harm kidney after consulting with your doctor like antibiotics.
3. Drink plenty of water and deep breathing exercises.
4. Your doctor might need to give you Chlorpromazine tablet.
I hope these steps will help you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
Thanks.
