Question: I was wondering - My AST and ALT was a little elevated. My AST was 38 (should be around 32) and my ALT was 44 and it should be around 43. Both are just a little high. I am 40 pounds over weight and I was wondering if my weight problem is what is causing this to go up. My Total Bilirubin was good and my Alkaline Phos was good. Can you help me!!

Brief Answer:
Mild elevation due to being overweight

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with you health care concerns

You have had recent labs and the ALT and AST are both minimally high. This is a direct reaction to being overweight. There is fat being deposited into your liver which is squeezing out the good liver cells causing the high ALT and AST. If you lose weight that will stop the process. If you don't the liver will eventually become very fatty and in extreme cases cause permanent liver damage. I recommend therefore weight loss, regular exercise program and low fat diet

At this time you are not in any danger but over decades of this it can lead to permanent damage.
