What Causes High Blood Pressure While Having Stress?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 May 2017
Question: I'm a female, 56 years of age. I started Angisar (Losartan) in 2011 with 25 mg od (due to stress of divorce) and in 2016, it was increased to 25 mg bd (due to stress of son's university admission).

On the 14th April I had a splitting headache and my bp was 170/120. I was hospitalised and prescribed Beta Loc Zok 50 mg and Adalat 30 mg. I was discharged on the 19th as the bp was 130/80. Why did my bp rise? What causes the bp to rise?

I want to return to Angisar only. I decided today (20th) to stop the Adalat and took 50 mg Angisar and 25 mg Beta Loc Zok (as I read you have to gradually reduce Beta Blockers). My bp today is 140/90. Please advise.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that these episodes of uncontrolled blood pressure values can be related to physical activity or emotional stress.

You should now that physical or emotional effort activate the sympathetic nervous system, leading to release of adrenaline and noradrenaline in your blood, thus leading to increased heart rate and blood pressure values.

Caffeine intake and electrolyte imbalance can trigger this situation too.

I agree with your decision on switching from Adalat to Angisar, because Angisar has less adverse effects and thus is better tolerated.

From the other hand it is too early to judge the effects of this change in medication in your blood pressure values. You should know that it may take up to a week for a new balance in blood pressure after each change in blood pressure medication.

For this reason, I recommend you to closely monitor your blood pressure values during these days. If your blood pressure values are still high after a week (above 140/90 mm Hg), I would recommend raising the dose of Angisar to 50 mg bid.

Regarding Beta Loc Zoc, I would recommend continue taking it. This is a really low dose, but you should know that it can help prevent possible spikes in blood pressure values.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

Feel free to ask me again whenever you need!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
