What Causes High Heart Rate And Increased BP While On Testosterone Supplements?

Posted on Mon, 28 Sep 2015
Question: I am 61. Lately my heart rate has been very high -- 157/93. Nothing in my life has changed. I am fit, not overweight, work out 4-5 times a week. Stress factors have not changed -- in other words none of the normal culprits for increased blood pressure. The only thing I can think of is I took a testosterone supplement of 1 ml per week for five months. However, I have not take any in a month. Could this be the culprit, and if so how long once off test before my heart rate returns to normal

Brief Answer:
Side effects should have weaned off until now

Detailed Answer:
Greetings, sir! Welcome to HCM. I carefully read your query. I am Dr. Meriton.

From recent and remote studies about testosterone replacement therapy and its side effects results that there is only a slight elevation of diastolic component of blood pressure and no out of the ordinary measures are undertaken to prevent hypertension while on testosterone. Also, there is a controversy to the long-standing of side effects, after discontinuation. It generally takes up to two weeks for the side effects to wean off.

On the other hand, it is not only episodes that capture our attention that can raise our blood pressure. There are a lot of physiological changes in the human body, that fluctuate our blood pressure, such as physical activity, various hormonal peak and XXXXXXX levels spun in 24 hours, and psychological stress. Therefore, a one-time measured high blood pressure cannot confirm nor exclude the diagnosis of hypertension. Also, blood pressure is recommended to be measured at least after 15 minutes on resting state, on both arms, and at least an hour or two after having caffeine-containing beverages. However, with all these said, there is the other part of the medal. It is not uncommon that these are the early stages of hypertension, combined with your gender and age. At this point, the most accurate examination would be a 24-hour blood pressure monitor, to precisely decide if this is hypertension or not. And if it is, it is probably in the stage of pre-hypertension, and only minimal dosage of blood pressure-lowering drugs would suffice.

I hope I was helpful and thorough with mu answer. If you have further questions, I would be happy to help. Wish you a good health.

Kind regards,
Dr. Meriton

Thanks, Doc. If it does come to taking a "minimal dosage" of blood pressure lowering medication would that be a lifelong necessity, or if my blood pressure comes back down to a normal/healthy range could I go off the medication?

Brief Answer:
Hello again.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back, sir!

Well, if the hypertension diagnosis is established, after the tests described above, then the drug instituted to fight your blood pressure, not only will do this, but also will protect your heart and arteries against the long-standing, minimally progressive, but deleterious effects of hypertension. Of course, you may try, always after you have consulted your cardiologist, to taper off your therapy, but the main aim is to keep the blood pressure under 140/90 mmHg, at resting state.

I hope I was helpful with my follow-up amswer. If you do not have further clarifications, I kindly as you to close the discussion and rate the answer.

Wish you a good health and I am glad I could help. Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
