What Causes High Platelet Count And High White Cell Count?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Jul 2014
Question: I had my blood work done and I had a high platelet count and high white cell count 15,000. My dr repeated the blood work 3 weeks later. Platelets where normal white cells 14,000. I had a tooth extracted one month prior to first blood work and bone implanted. Could my abnormal blood be a result of that procedure. I also had a severe rash on my legs and hands one week prior to second blood work. Also coworkers had bronchitis during this same period.

Brief Answer:
It is not leukemia

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am Dr. Jyothi BL and I would like to answer your query.

High white cell count is usually secondary to infection. However to rule out leukemia, differential count and a peripheral smear study needs to be done.
If you can attach both the reports, or tell me reports in detail I might be able to help you.

Based on the above reports, I can say the possibility of leukemia diagnosis is nil. White cell count will be in at-least around a lakh in leukemia.

The high white cell count could be due tooth extraction and inflammation due to it. Now, maybe associated rash or bronchitis (asymptomatic infection) could be a reason for the increased white cell count

Platelet increase occurs during hemorrhage. Tooth extraction procedure could have increased the counts, which has come back to normal now.

Leukemia, I usually think at this age is chronic myeloid leukemia and chronic lymphoid leukemia. You have none of these findings in your data given. I would say, there is no leukemia based on above reports.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
