default
Posted on Thu, 6 Nov 2014
Question: Hi ... I recently had labs done to check my hormone levels after not feeling well for the past few months. I am almost 49 so it was no XXXXXXX my testosterone and progesterone were low - what was shocking was my estrogen was 800. The doctor who ordered the tests was a hormone replacement physician and said I need to get advice from a physician but didn't really recommend what type of physician I should see and in your opinion, is this a major health issue. Do you have any advice that might help?

Brief Answer:
Need more information.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.

I would like to know the units of the hormone levels given and also if there is any history of breast condition. If the estrogen values are more than 400 picograms/ml. at your age, they are considered higher.

Sometimes, higher estrogen values are observed at menopause in contrast to the usual situation of low hormone level. This can happen due to several conditions like low fiber diet, environmental conditions and overloading the liver with toxins. Overweight, insulin resistance also can be a cause.

Also, there is an increased risk of breast cancer, I must say, when there is an excess of estrogen at this age. To be cautious, I would advise a screening and if there is a family history, regular check up is needed.

In the current scenario, I would suggest visiting a gynecologist and an endocrinologist who can, together sort out your condition and plan further management.

Hope I have clarified your query. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
