Question: Have been told my hives rash is caused by the sun. I get the rash on my stomach and my back which has never seen the sun. Is it possible to have a rash if the area is not exposed to the sun?

Brief Answer:
If sun allergy was diagnosed, then the answer is No

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Well that depends on your diagnosis ma'am, let me explain. In cases with a simple rash due to exposure to the sun, a sun rash, a heat rash, etc; there has to be exposure to the sun. And in all cases, a rash develops on only those regions exposed.

But with a diagnosis like systemic lupus erythematosus (for example), there is photosensitivity and a rash is caused from exposure to the sun, but the rash can develop in areas which are not directly exposed to the sun.

No coming to a more in depth analysis of your query ma'am, if a biopsy reported an allergy to the sun then the rash should and will develop in regions exposed to the rash and not in other places. Could it be possible that you were wearing a thin blouse through which sunlight could have passed and reached your back and abdominal region? Because without this, I doubt you should develop a rash on regions which cannot be exposed to the sun.

I hope you find my response helpful ma'am. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help you.

Best wishes.
