What Causes Horrible Gum Pain That Travels To Different Parts Of Mouth?

Posted on Tue, 12 May 2015
Question: Hi, I am having horrible gum pain that travels to different parts of the mouth. I have had this on and off for 7 years, and in the time, I've seen 8 different dentists. Of all those dentists, only two felt there was any gum disease. I've had laser gum surgery but, only two weeks after it, the pain started coming back... My last dentist found nothing wrong in x-rays and concluded that my gum pain was not a dental issue. Do you have any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
gum infection, teeth infection, neuralgia

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query.
As far as the pain in the gums is concerned, it can be because of the gum infection or the tooth infection which has spread to involve the surrounding bone. Nothing to be panic, consult a good oral physician and get it evaluated.

If it is a gum infection, you need to get a scaling and root planing done. If it is a tooth infection, the teeth has to be treated with root canal treatment.

The other possible cause can be neuralgic pain, but this produces severe shock kind of pain. This occurs secondary to any nerve injury by trauma or viral infection(herpes zoster). So consult a oral physician and get it evaluated.

These are the possible causes and diagnosis based on the description of your problem. If you can upload the images of your gums, teeth and the radiographs i can tell you the exact diagnosis and treatment plan. I hope i have answered your query. Take care.

I have already been to the oral physician and he says there is no gum infection, no tooth infection. He says my teeth and gums are fine and that my gum pain is not a dental problem. Root planning and gum surgery have already been done but did not cure gum pain. Any other possibilities?

Brief Answer:
Trigeminal neuralgia, neurophysician, carbamazepine

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feed back.
If you have already undergone gum surgery and ruled out gum and tooth infection, then you need to consult a neurophysician to rule out the trigeminal neuralgia. If it is diagnosed as trigeminal neuralgia then it can be treated with carbamazepine.
I hope i have answered your query. Take care.
