What Causes Hunger Craving In The Night During Sleep?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Jan 2015
Question: About 2 weeks ago my stomach started to wake me up after midnight 2 -3 times indicating it needed something to eat. I checked my blood glucose to rule out hypoglycemia. What else could the reason be for that sudden food inquiry of my stomach. It never happened before.

Brief Answer:
early morning stomach pain

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Hunger pain, particularly early morning epigastric pain is likely due to duodenal ulcer(DU).
Pain that awakes the patient from sleep (between midnight and 3 A.M.) is the most discriminating symptom, with two-thirds of DU patients describing this complaint. However, this symptom is also present in one-third of patients with NUD (Non-ulcer dyspepsia). Bed-time H2 receptor antagonist like Ranitidine (standard dose 150 mg orally) helps, pending investigation like Gastro-duodenoscopy,if it is persistent.
