Brief Answer:
Here is some information:

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

Bilirubin is a substance that is produced when aged red blood cells are broken down. It is normally secreted in the bile that the liver produces and then goes out in the urine and stool, giving the stool it's characteristic brown-yellow color. There is normally a small amount of bilirubin in the blood, but when it is in excess in the blood it is called hyperbilirubinemia.

Hyperbilirubinemia can be caused by:
increased bilirubin production
liver cells not taking up bilirubin to process it
a problem with processing (conjugating) the bilirubin
a problem with the conjugated bilirubin being secreted into the bile

Obstruction of the gallbladder, hemolytic jaundice, and Gilbert's disease can cause hyperbilirubinemia. There is also a hyperbilirubinemia that can occur in newborns.

GI stands for gastrointestinal tract which includes the digestive organs and organs of elimination. The bile goes into the small intestines and then into the large intestines and into the stool.

Treatment depends on the cause of the hyperbilirubinemia. If you can tell me more about the problems and specific lab results and imaging results (such as ultrasound or CT scan), or if there is a diagnosis, I can tell you more about the process that is going on and the treatment.
