What Causes Hyperhidrosis?
why
You need a complete evaluation.
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I read carefully your query and understand your concern.
The condition of profuse sweating is called Hyperhidrosis.
Hyperhidrosis may be idiopathic (when the cause is unknown) or secondary to other diseases.
Possible causes for excessive sweating include:
-Metabolic disorders
-Medications
-Chronic alcoholism
Medications such as propranolol, physostigmine, pilocarpine, tricyclic antidepressants, and serotonin reuptake inhibitors,Efavirenz have been implicated in Hyperhidrosis .It is important to know if you are taking any kind of medication.
First of all it is important to exclude systemic disease that can cause hyperhidrosis. Most common causes include metabolic disease like :
-Diabetes Mellitus ,Hyperthyroidism , Hyperpitutarism , pheochromocytoma etc.
It is important to know when this condition started ( early in childhood ,adolescence or lately) and what areas of the body are affected (if it affects all the body or is localized just in palms and soles, axillae ).
If your excessive sweating is present mainly at night conditions like Tuberculosis and Hodgkin disease should be excluded.
The criteria that indicate idiopathic hyperhidrosis (with no known cause ) include:
-excessive sweating of 6 months or more in duration, primarily involving axillae,palms,soles,craniofacial sites;
- bilateral and symmetric sweating
-sweating is not present at night
-onset at age 25 years or younger
-positive family history (if you have other family members with the same problem).
If excessive sweating is interfering with your daily activities ,I suggest to consult a physician and get examined. You need a complete evaluation.
You may need to run some tests including :-Thyroid function tests
-Blood glucose levels
-Urinary catecholamines, Uric acid levels
-A PPD test to exclude Tuberculosis.
After excluding secondary causes for your excessive sweating ,there are some options to treat it ,local or systemic treatment.Your doctor will chose the best option for you.
Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubt to clarify.I will be happy to assist you further.
Kind Regards,
