What Causes Hyperventilation, pain In Chest And Numbness In Hands?

I snapped a ligament or something in my ankle about 3.5 weeks ago.. and from the minute i started using the crutches at the ER, I began to hyperventilate. This has gotten increasingly worse.. so much so that if I don.t take a half a pill of xanax (.25 mg) every 2 hours (prescribed by my pa), i can.t function. I hyperventilated when i was younger when upset on occasion, but XXXXXXX t done it in years until this. The burning pain in my lungs, the numbness in my hands and forearms is terrifying and makes it worse. I have now studied breathing techniques and have changed to diaphragm breathing (when i remember).. but I don't want to live on xanax forever.. and most of all i want to know HOW/WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? and can it pass? it just seems to be getting worse... any insight will be appreciated!
