What Causes Increased Blood Pressure And Headache Despite Taking Medication?

default
Posted on Sat, 15 Apr 2017
Question: Hi. I take 10 mg Amlodipine and Triamterene/hctz 37.5/25 and have for a while now. My bp never gets to the "normal pressure" range, but is usually around 150s/ 90s. The past couple days it's gone up... a lot. Tonight it was 198/102 and I have a lot of pressure in my neck and a headache. Took my meds (always take them at night) a little early, layed down for an hour and took the pressure again. This time it was 205/108. I have a dr appt scheduled for next Wednesday, they couldn't see me earlier. Wondering with the neck pressure and headache along with the increasing bp if I should go to the ER. I'm a 47 yr old female with long history of high bp and family history of heart issues. I don't smoke or drink, I exercise and I'm 5'7" and weigh 165.

Brief Answer:
Yes better you go to er

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
It's a high one and also associated with symptoms so should visit er. Till the time you have additional half tablet of amlodipine and monitor half hourly blood pressure.
If your symptoms have resolved and bp is coming down then you can wait and start better antihypertensive like Tab Telmisartan hydrochlorothiazide combination 40/12.5 mg right now and once from tomorrow. Have low salt diet and regular exercises after bp is controlled.
Hope this helps you and get back if you have any doubts.
