What Causes Increased Heart Rate After Taking Levothyroxine?
Question: My Dr. put me on Levothyroxine. I am a diabetic and have HBP, for which I take med.
Beta Blockers, Maczide and Tiazac. Take Metformin and Glipizide for Diabetes.
Since I took the Levothyroxine, my BP shot up to 225/113/101. it also increased my Diabetes. Is there any connection between the Thyroid med and my other med.? I do not take the Thyroid med. anymore, and things are back to normal. My Dr. told me that the Thyroid med . did not cause that. He wants be to go back on it. I refuse.I was in the ER twice and was told by the nurses also, that it was safe to take the Thyroid med, with my other medication.
Am I doing the right thing by not taken the thyroid med. anymore?

Brief Answer:
Start at low dose
Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern. Levothyroxine can increase the heaart rate and can cause problems in elderly. That is exactly why we start on a small dose first. At your age, we start with 25 to 50 mcg first and slowly build up the dose over several weeks. In that way, it is safe.
If you have hypothyroidism, and if you do not take medicines, that may not be the right thing to do. Start on small dose and go slow on that and slowly titrate the dose. An endocrinologist is the best person to do that for you
