default
Posted on Tue, 18 Apr 2017
Question: I have had a virus for 8 days, turned into bronchitis and a very painful larynx. I once had CMV, which caused ulcerations on my larynx, this feels similar. Is there anything to take for it? Coughing is painful.

Hello,

Well that sounds miserable.

While it is usually a viral infection that children can get, croup can affect adults too and cause inflammation of the larynx, trachea, and bronchi.

The viscous lidocaine gargle can help your throat if it is painful, but it is true that it won't be able to go into the larynx. Worth a try though to see if helping some of the pain above the larynx might help the overall level of discomfort.

If it is croup, cool moist air can help decrease the inflammation. You can put on some warm clothes so that you won't get chilled and then go outside for a while to see if that helps.

Another thing that can help, as you also have a cough, is guaifenesin with codeine. The codeine can help relieve pain in general, and is a good cough suppressant too.

Given your history with CMV though, I recommend that you do go in to be seen. Usually after having CMV people have some immunity to having it again, but that isn't 100 percent.

The doctor can look down to your vocal cords by indirect layrngoscopy.
This just involves a mirror like dentists use, held at the back of your throat, that reflects your vocal cords. The doctor doesn't have to actually touch your throat with it. You have probably experienced this before. So I recommend calling your doctor first thing tomorrow.

I hope this information helps.
