What Causes Intermittent Esophageal Pain And Burning Sensation?

For the past 2 years I've been having pain in my esophagus on and off. Symptoms like pain, voice changes, burning, spasms. But in the past 2 months I seem to have completely lost the little control I had over this problem and I have this almost continuous burning pain in my lower esophagus. When I only a little reflux moving up it burns immediately and takes a long time to feel better but comes back quickly. I feel there's definitely something wrong in my lower esophagus because it's burning too easy and I can't get it to heal and stop burning. I'm now sleeping with my bed up about 6 inches on one side for the past 2 weeks. I'm afraid I may have Barrett's esophagus since this has been going on for the past 2 years now and getting worst. I've had Omeprazole prescribed and take it sporadically because it gives me joint pains.
My question is what do you think my condition is and also are there alternatives for Omeprazole when you get joints pain from using it ?
I will go see my doctor and ask for an endoscopy but I'm getting nervous about this.
Thank you
Seems Reflux Esophagitis
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing in
It appears to be reflux esophagitis
Yes you should go for an Upper GI endoscopy to rule out any pathology you suspect
Here are few tips to reduce the reflux :
1] Avoid spicy, fermented meals
2] Do not have heavy meals
3] Avoid smoking and alcohol
4] Wear loose clothes
5] Do not stoop
6] Do not lift heavy weights
7] Raise the head end of your bed
8] If Obese lose weight
9] If under stress - Manage stress levels by meditation and exercise
Continue keeping the head end of the bed raised
If proton pump inhibitors do not suit you, you may go for H2 receptor antagonist like Ranitidine with domperidone, though it is very unlikely PPI will cause joint pain, long term and very high doses for more than a year have been reported to cause osteoporotic fractures
Hope this helps
