What Causes Intermittent Sharp Pain In The Chest Area?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Mar 2017
Question: I am having sharp, intermittent pains in the exact area of my heart. I also have belched twice. It was not concurrent and did not seem to make a difference. This started two hours ago, has occurred three or four times. My question is whether the belching ( I never belch ordinarily) is just gas or if it AND the odd pains mean something. I take blood thinners and have had recent stress tests that revealed nothing. I am an 81 year old woman in excellent health.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that belching is not indicative of any cardiac disorders.

It is related to gas formation. That is why indigestion or gastro-esophageal reflux seem to be the main cause of your troubles.

From the other hand your normal cardiac tests are very reassuring that these symptoms are not related to your heart.

Coming to this point, I would recommend taking an antiacid or PPI (omeprazole, pantoprazole, etc.).

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
