What Causes Irregular Menstrual Bleeding After Taking Emergency Contraceptive Pills?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Oct 2015
Question: I ate emergency contraceptive pills (72hrs) 4 times since last year. On September 2014, January 2015, 4th August 2015 and 29th August 2015. Last month I had period on 18th August, this month I had period on 8th September and it lasted till today. But it is on 1 or 2 alternate days that I am having period (with very less blood on each period). When I think it's over, it comes again after a day or two. Is there some menstrual problem with me? Is it because of the contraceptive pills? If so, is the problem serious? Please help me

Brief Answer:
emergency pill cause hormonal imbalance

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to healthcare magic.I understand your concern.
In my opinion emergency contraception pill is a high dose of progesterone.
It is to be used in case of emergency situations but not for frequent usage.
The pill cause hormonal imbalance leading to irregular bleeding and it becomes uncontrolled sometimes.
So I suggest you to restrict it to very emergency times and avoid frequent use.
The irregular bleeding in your case is due to hormonal imbalance in the body.
I suggest you to consult doctor as you might need a course of combined hormonal pills for regularization of cycles.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss furthur.

Thank you for answering. Ok I'll try to consult doctor. I think it should be Gynaecology am I right?

Anyway, is the problem serious? I am a little worried. Does it cause a permanent (or long term) damage in any part of my health? Ovary?

Brief Answer:
gynaecologist consultation is needed

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,I got your query.I understand your concern.
In my opinion it is not serious for now but it might cause complications like severe bleeding which might not get controlled by medicines if the frequent usage continues that is why I am informing you in advance.
So do not worry yes you need to consult gynaecologist.
The emergency pill will not damage ovary or any part of the body. But it changes the hormonal milieu in the body leading to problems like irregular bleeding.
So relax.Practice safe sex with condom.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss furthur.

I think I have 2 free follow ups, so for my last question, I'm trying to consult doctor, but due to other reasons I won't be able to do that quickly.

Will there be any problem if I don't consult doctor now (or this week)? Is consulting doctor strictly required in my problem?
Will this irregular bleeding stop anyway after sometime without consultation of doctor? (provided I don't take the emergency contraceptive pills anymore)

Because, to be XXXXXXX meeting doctor is not easy currently in my situation. It is a personal problem. However, if you think it is strictly required, then I'll have to try to put my personal problems aside and consult doctor.

Thank you very much for your help.

Brief Answer:
Continuous irregular bleeding leads to anaemia

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,I got your query.I understand your concern.
In my opinion irregular bleeding continuously leads to anaemia.
Anaemia leads to clinical symptoms like weakness, tiredness, fatiguebility etc.
If you cannot make it now you can wait and check for the bleeding.
It might stop spontaneously but might take time.
If bleeding increases then consult doctor.
Take iron rich diet like green leafy veggies, dates, zaggery ,liver to combat anaemia.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss furthur.
