Posted on Fri, 26 Aug 2016
Question: Hello, I am 35 years old, overweight, no children and am not pregnant or on birth control pills. Since last October, been having irregular periods and spotting and off and on cramping. The doctor has ordered me to undergo an endometrial biopsy and am wondering if there is a big risk I could have pre cancer or cancer. (my mother had uterine cancer) I am really scared waiting to find out

Brief Answer:
Investigations are needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
I can think of the following reasons for your abnormal menstrual bleeding -
1. Weight gain is a major factor .
2. Stress , anxiety, tension on the personal or professional front, late nights, erratic eating habits - do any of these apply ? They are all known causative factors.
3. Thyroid hormone abnormalities, a cervical or uterine polyp, lesions or erosions on the cervix, uterine fibroids, endometrial hyperplasia, polycystic ovarian syndrome - these are all some conditions associated with irregular cycles and sporadic heavy bleeding.
You should have -
1. Internal check up - per vaginum and per speculum
2. Pelvic ultrasound scan
3 . Hormonal levels - FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, OGTT, free testosterone, DHEAS, lipid profile.
4. A bleeding and clotting profile to rule out bleeding tendencies.
Endometrial biopsy and all these investigations will help in detecting the cause and then proper treatment. Please do not worry.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

I am going in Monday for the biopsy and I think the worse part will be the wait on the results! Yes, I do struggle with an eating disorder and I suspect that has something to do with it but am trying to overcome that. Thank you for answering, I have no kids and hope it's not something bad because do want them in the future

Biopsy is necessary.

Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
It is best to get the biopsy done and remove all the doubts. The irregularity can be due to eating disorder.

Thank you doctor, did the biopsy today and transvaginal sonogram came back normal but thickened endometrial stripe so I hope it is not worrisome. The doctor doesn't think I have it but I suppose checking to make sure
