Question: Hello doctor,

I had unprotected sex in May and the next day I got periods.Since I had unprotected sex I had Ipill on the first day of my period. My periods lasted for seven days i.e. in the month of May.In the next month I missed my periods so in July I consulted a doctor she advised me to take a pregnancy test at home which came out negative. So she prescribed Sandoz Regestrone 5 mg for five days after which I got my periods on 16th July which lasted only for 4 days. My periods usually lasts for 5 days.Again this month my periods is delayed. I had mild cramps and headache around two weeks back, my stomach is bloated, increase in vaginal discharge but still no sign of periods. I had protected sex on 12th August and this time we used condoms.
I am scared if I am pregnant. Can Regestrone cause changes to the next menstrual cycle or is it because of the Ipill I had two months back. I also have PCOD problem. Please help me doctor I am really worried.

Brief Answer:
Hi, thanks for using HCM..

Detailed Answer:
I understand your concern.

Do you have regular periods? From when were you diagnosed to have PCOS and how? Was it detected by scan or by blood test?

I pill can cause menstrual irregularities which lasts only for a month or two. In some it causes withdrawal bleeding, in others it causes delayed periods or intermenstrual spotting.

If you had a regular periods prior to this, then irregularity can be due i pill. In that case get a pregnancy test stat and if negative you can take progesterone tablet for withdrawal bleeding. You can wait to see how the next period comes.

But if your periods are always irregular it can be due to PCOS. Do you have excess weight gain? Diet, exercise will help to restore normal periods in mild PCOS. In severe PCOS , OCP's might be required for 3 cycles.

Hope I have answered your queries. Feel free to ask any doubts.. Good health..

Thank you doctor for your quick reply. I am 29 yrs of age and I have had PCOD problem since the age of 18. It was detected by doing a blood test and sonography. But since last two years I was having regular periods. I started having problem only after I had Ipill. Since I missed my periods in the month of XXXXXXX I got a preganancy test done which was negative and then I had Sandoz regestrone 5 mg and I got my periods last month i.e. in July. But this month again my periods are delayed. I had protected sex again on 12th August but we had used a condom.

Can Sandoz Regestrone cause changes to the next menstrual cycle since I had it last month.

Brief Answer:
Hi, Thanks for writing..

Detailed Answer:
I pill can cause menstrual irregularity for 1 or 2 cycles. Delayed periods with regesterone is not known.

Even though you had a protected intercourse, the chance of failure with condom is 13%. So get a pregnancy test now and if negative you can take regesterone in this cycle also and wait to see how the next period appears. If its due to i pill, the next cycle will be regular. But irregularity of periods persists, it can be due to PCOS.

Hope your doubt is clarified.. Feel free to ask any doubts.. Good health..
