What Causes Irregular Periods After Having Contraceptive Injection?

Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Question: Dear Gynaecologist,
In the month of May 2014 we had decided to go for family planning. And accordingly we visited gynaecologist. She suggested us one of the two approaches ie. Copper T and an injection ( may be Dimpovan - but I'm sure about the name). So, on 31st may, when her periods were running, she took the injection. Doctor has said that, it'll be effective only for the period of 3 months. And during these three months periods may not be regular/in determinant.
But now, its been close to 5 months and my wife's periods haven't been regular. I'm little worried. Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
The irregular periods are normal finding.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The effect of the injection on the periods may be prolonged and the periods may take 3-4 months after the effect of injection is over to get regularized. The mild discrepancy in the bleeding pattern that she is having is likely to subside on its own in next few months.
In case the bleeding pattern is too erratic and bleeding is heavy then she can choose to have an oral contraceptive pill for next 2-3 months. This will help in regularizing her bleeding pattern.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
