Brief Answer: Need to first find the cause for hepatomegaly sir Detailed Answer: Hello sir and welcome. Thank you for writing to us. It was the right move to suggest a urine culture and sensitivity examination and an abdominal ultrasound. As you must have been informed, the irregular thickness of the urinary bladder is due to the urinary infection, and it shall subside with the antibiotics that your doctor will prescribe for the urine infection based on the urine culture report. As for the hepatomegaly, this just proves very slight enlargement of the liver. The cause cannot be found with just an ultrasound sir. It is very important to find the cause for the enlargement, and only based on that treatment can be advised if required. Let me list a few of the causes for the hepatomegaly for your reference: -Medications: Is your wife on any medications other than the currently prescribed antibiotics for the urine infection? -Viral infections: Did your wife have any recent infections? -Cholesterol related abnormalities -Alcohol use -Obesity: Please provide your wife's weight and height sir -Diabetes and other chronic conditions -Cardiac abnormalities -Fructose intolerance and a few other less common causes. As you can see sir, the causes vary quite a bit. So it would be difficult to comment on treatment without knowing the cause. If you cannot relate to any of the above causes that I have listed for you, please visit your doctor for a more elaborate evaluation and also request for the following investigations for your wife: -Lipid profile -Glycaemic profile -Liver function test -CBC (complete blood count) These investigations will help in finding the cause or at least narrowing it down. You can meet your wife's doctor with these reports or attach them to our conversation and I shall help interpret them for you sir. I hope you understand why it is important to first find the cause sir. I also hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications sir, I would be more than happy to help you.

Brief Answer: All queries addressed sir Detailed Answer: Hello sir. Hepatomegaly is not a disease sir, it is merely a symptom. As I have listed conditions and situations which can cause hepatomegaly in my previous response, you can help me by writing back to me about any of those conditions or situations being present in your wife. Treatment is simple sir, all we have to do is to find the exact cause for the hepatomegaly from the listed conditions in my previous response, and discontinue your wife's exposure to that particular cause and her liver will soon return back to its normal size. Treatment will not be expensive, but may vary depending on the cause. It can vary from a mere 50 INR to around 1000 INR, not more sir. As explained, treatment will depend on the cause sir, so we need to find the cause and treat that, not the hepatomegaly. If we do not go for treatment immediately, there can be two scenarios: 1. If the cause for the hepatomegaly is no longer present, then the hepatomegaly will resolve itself, without requiring any treatment 2. If the cause is still present, it may cause further enlargement of the liver, resulting in a few more symptoms like jaundice, itching, rash, vomiting, etc. I hope I have explained this in a manner best understood by you sir. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help you. Best wishes.

My son ( 2 yr and three months )has been suffering from fever and cough since five days. We are using medicine since three days. Doc suggested paracetamol oral suspension (Dose 3ml at a time, daily there times at any time for five days) for fever and Bronchodilator, Mucolytic Expectorant ( Dose 5ml at a time, daily three times for 15 days). we visited another doctor he suggested nebulization for four times in two days and suggested pecef oral suspension( Dose 3-5ml once in day for five days). It contains cefpodoxime proxetil. I believe it is antibiotic. Is it good to use antibiotics for kids ? Till now I have given 5 ml antibiotic only in one dose and we stopped it as per my friend request. We are using fever and cough syrup daily 3 times each. I would like to know is it safe to go with antibiotic ? My son got trouble with cough during sleeping since 4-5 days. Because of that he is not sleeping comfortably. In day time also he is facing same problem at some time. His voice tone also changed. I want to see my son as normal. Can you a advice right treatment / suggestions now?

Brief Answer: Please go ahead with the antibiotics sir Detailed Answer: Hello once again sir. Please do not listen to laymen over a medical personnel sir. Especially when it is your sons well being at stake. If you are worried about anything in the treatment regimen, you can take a second or third opinion from other doctors, but do not take a laymans (non-medical) word over a doctors. Taking the antibiotics will only help in treating the infection that your child has. If this is a bacterial infection then only antibiotics will help, and so please do not hesitate the administer them to your child based on your doctors recommendations. If there is anything worrying you sir, I am always available tp help. But a doctor would know more about the welfare of a patient that a layman, don't you think sir? Hope this helps sir. Please do not hesitate to write to me about anything, I am always avaliable to help. Best wishes.
