What Causes Itching And Inflammation In Vagina While On Metronidazole?
I've been under a lot of stress since early May death in my family. Early July I was experiencing yeasty infection symptoms. Treated myself a few weeks ago with Monistat, no relief. I went to general doctor last week and they couldn't detect any yeast or bacteria. She put me on 7 2x a day Metrodizanole. I started taking a ultra Flora probiotic and finally got a little relief from that. I'm still not feeling much better with the inflammation and itching. I'm 44 and don't know if this would have anything to do with hormones or not. Help! I don't know if another round if antibiotics would help or any prescription topical creams?? Thanks
Yes a consultation of gynecologist with specific treatment would help.
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for asking I have read & understood your problem.
The symptoms of itching you had since May .. being treated with Monistat & 7 days course of Metronidazole & not relieved till the date, need-
-An internal assessment / few investigations to find the exact cause. Examination of the sex partner followed by his treatment too is advisable. You need consultation o a gynecologist.
- Psychological stress can aggravate the symptoms but can not be cause of itching. Hormonal disturbance can alter the normal vaginal flora to cause itching.( possible in pregnancy or hormonal imbalance )
- Uncontrolled infection can have an associated diabetes. Raised blood sugar can interfere & prolong healing. So checking of blood sugars followed by needful specific treatment along with treatment of underlying infection would help .. in such a case.
* In this context, I advise you to consult a gynecologist for detailed internal examination/ menstrual history taking . followed by vaginal swab test to know exact causative organism ( if needful ) & hormonal assessment for noting the imbalance/ blood glucose test... as per need.
This will be followed by specific oral treatment ( Metranidazole/ Fluconazole ) for both sex partners, local ointment / vaginal pessaries ( candid gel or vaginal pessaries ) along with supplements of lacto bacillus preparation OR specific treatment for imbalance along with treatment for raised blood sugar if needful ( by a Diabetologist )
A follow up as advised & needful repeat courses are to be taken till infection is totally resolved.
* self help-
- a good genital hygiene to be preserved.
- Avoid itching with help of local ointment/ psychological determination,
- Avoid sex till cured,
I feel with an expert advise & self care you would overcome the harrasing problem very well.
Hope, the answer was both informative & helpful to you. Please feel free to ask any more information you need, I would be happy to help.
Thanks.
