What Causes Itching At The Incision Of Bartholin Cyst?
Question: I had a Bartholin Cyst drained via incision a little over a week ago. A vaginal culture taken the next day showed E Coli and my doctor started me on a 10 day regiment of antibiotics Wednesday. The area of the incision, while healed on the outside has been itching quite a bit. How can I alleviate the itching it's really a nuisance?
Brief Answer:
Massage with emollient, avoid scratching
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Bartholin cyst is treated by marsupilisation in which an incision is given on the skin and cyst wall is left open to drain which eventually heals like an abrasion on skin.
So basically the itching you are experiencing is because of the irritation on that open surface after contact with clothes.
Just apply some gel based emollient cream or even a simple moisturizer and massage gently on the affected area.
At all times avoid scratching the area and keep that clean and dry.
In case itching persists or there is raw area even after 3 days post surgery then visit your gynecologist for examination to rule out secondary infection.
Take care.

Should I also be using any type of special cleanser/soap on the area? I started using a gentler soap yesterday because my regular soap seemed to irritate the area. I'm a bit caught off guard by the itching because the draining via incision was a week and three days ago. I have been using a triple antibiotic (Neosporin) on the area, but it did not seem to help with the itching.
Brief Answer:
if skin covering present apply moisturizer
Detailed Answer:
Hi, welcome back.
Try to see the appearance of the affected area that if it has healed with a covering of skin on it or it has a dirty looking scab over it showing a raw area in center like a crater of volcano.
In case skin has covered it then no need of neosporin and just a simple massage will help in allievating the itching.
But in case it appears like a crater then you need to visit your doctor and till then you should clean it with regular soap and water daily and apply the antibiotic over it till you get appointment with your doctor.
Take care.
