What Causes Itching Of The Caruncle?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Dec 2014
Question: Itchy lacrimal caruncle, left eye, removed hairs growing out of it yesterday to see if that would ease the itchiness. Was worried the hairs might be a symptom of something as I have never seen them before and they lacked roots - they seemed to lack pigmentation and roots the same as the hairs that I occasionally get growing from my stretch marks (which I assumed that the stretch mark had caused the hair follicle to deform and they now grown in sets of 3, lacking pigmentation and roots, meaning that they just slide out when pulled with fingers). The hairs I pulled from my my left lacrimal caruncle were the same, 2 of them growing in sets of 3, lacking pigmentation and roots, and they just slid out painlessly when I grabbed them with the tweezers. But the itchiness hasn't subsided and having hairs growing out of that part of my eye seems somewhat unnatural. 25 year old female, on anxiety and reflux medication, with ongoing TMJ issues currently being seen to (incase any of that is relevant).

Brief Answer:
Hairs over caruncle are normal, no need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic.

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed your history. It seems from the history that you are having itching of the caruncle and you have pulled out hairs on the caruncle.

Carucnle consists of hair follicles, sebaceous glands and other skin elements
The hairs of the caruncle are tiny as compared to those of the eyelashes. No need to worry these are normal and sometimes these may overgrow in a condition called as trichiasis and needs to be removed when they grow inwards to touch the conjunctiva and irritate the eye.
Hence no need to worry about the hairs over the caruncle.

Regarding the itching of the caruncle, this can be treated symptomatically by the use of anti-inflammatory eye drops which contain flurbiprofen or ketorolac or any of the anti-inflammatory drugs.

Hence I advice you to consult your doctor for prescription of drugs.

Hope the information is helpful to you.
Thank you
