What Causes Itching On Penis?
Question: I have had an in-dwelling catheter in place for 5 weeks and for several weeks now I have had stinging and itching at the head and left side of my penis which is causing me a lot of distress. I have had a course of Trimethoprim tablets from my GP as well as some clotrimazole hydrocortisone cream I am currently using but so far nothing seems to have got rid of the itching, although the stinging doesn't seem quite as bad (unless it is my imagination). The catheter is due to be removed in 5 days but I don't know if that will help and also, if I cannot empty my bladder properly they might even put another one in, which fills me with terror! I am resident in the UK, BTW. Any suggestions please?

I suppose you have been catheterized with Foley's or such type of catheters.
The discomfort you are feeling does happen to many people who have these indwelling catheters placed.
Actually they cause pain and irritation as they are into your Urinary tract.
I would like to know that why was it placed and that too for such a long period.
Usually we change the catheter every 15 days to prevent infection and to prevent stickiness or adhesions of cathter to the walls of Urinary tract.
I feel that you need not wait for 5 days before you get it removed. You can ask your doctor to remove it as you are having severe discomfort.
No medicines are actually effective in this problem.
Many people use pain killers but I can't advise you that before knowing about your base line condition.

The reason I had a catheter inserted is because I have an enlarged prostate and could not empty my bladder properly. Ihave tried pain killers such as codein but they do not help.

My advise is to discuss with your doctor for the surgery.
Another important thing is to do bladder training done before you get your catheter removed. This is because if you are catheterized for a long time then your sensations decrease over the time. So it is important to do bladder training before you get it removed.
You have to clamp the catheter and when you feel the sensation remove it. Do this for 3 times atleast before your catheter is removed.
