What Causes Jaundice And Elevated Bilirubin Levels In A New Born Baby?
Question: My new baby has jaundice and her bilirubin is elevated. She has not had very much oral intake. Can dehydration cause her bilirubin to be higher than it would be if she was better hydrated?
Brief Answer:
Dehydration can aggravate neonatal jaundice
Detailed Answer:
Hi
I understand your concerns but don't worry. Physiological jaundice can occur in 50% of normal newborns and it usually resolves by 2 weeks of age. Poor feeding and hydration can increase the jaundice. So, a good healthy diet and hydration of mother and regular breast feeding is of utmost importance.
I would like to know the reports of your baby so that I may help you in the best possible way. Also, mention whether she was premature or not, her birth weight, your blood group and any associated illness.
You may upload the details for my reference.
