What Causes Knee Baker's Cyst?
Question: started doing 5 miles, rapid walks 2 - 3 times per week and I have developed a ping pong ball sized lump on the back of my knee. You can only see the lump when my knee is extended. At first it was pain free, but noow it is getting achy when I walk or stand for prolonged periods. I stopped walking for 10 days, but no change. What do I have; what do I need to do/wht treatment do I need?
Brief Answer:
sounds like Baker's cyst
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
It sounds like you have developed a Baker's cyst. These are usually due to an underlying arthritis in the knee joint and represent an inflammation of the bursa around the knee. Usually they resolve on their own but if they are very painful you may need to see an orthopedist. Usually they first would do a steroid injection bu if they become extremely painful sometimes they have to do a surgery.
Use and ace wrap and ibuprofen for pain. See your doctor if it is not resolving in a month or so.
