What Causes Knee Muscle Weakness And Balancing Issues After An RTKR?

default
Posted on Mon, 18 Jul 2016
Question: Ever since I had a RTKR, and then a Revision to the RTKR, the muscles around my knee seem weak. I have trouble balancing on it, I have fallen due to it. I gained weight throughout the 2+ years when I could not do my usual exercises. I want to get back to them, but I'm afraid of the balance situation. I am seeing another Orthopedic Surgeon the end of April and I suspect he might Rx more Physical Therapy. But then, of course, being one who does a lot of catastrophic thinking, I think "brain cancer." I know that's probably ridiculous. My knee has been opened 3 times, and I'm thinking the muscles are just weak.

Brief Answer:
muscle weakness; follow as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome to HCM.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
You have undergone surgery in your knee several times, so the muscles around your knee might have been injured and have got weak. I would suggest the following-

Extensive exercise- quadriceps drill and bed side knee bending. Walking should be aided by a support like walker or stick.
Faradic stimulation or galvanic stimulation of quadriceps muscles under supervision of a physiotherapist.
Electromyography and nerve conduction velocity study of lower limbs.
A thorough checkup by an orthopedician is recommended as clinical examination is necessary to assess the current status.

It would be helpful if you can post your previous reports so that I can have a look.
Get back with the reports too.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

Thank you very much .... I will be seeing a new Orthopedist the end of April and I will let you know what he says. In the meantime I will print out your response. A friend also told me to use a cane. I guess I better get it out again.

Again, many thanks and I'll write when I hear from the Orthopedist.

Thanks so much again.
