What Causes Knee Pain And Elevated Thyroid And Eosinophils?

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Nov 2014
Question: My son is 19 years old and has had something popping out on the outside of his knees (both). It is more pronounced and more "formed" (round and squishy) on his right knee. He did do physical therapy for the left knee and that helped but now it has started on the right, more pronounced and as I said more "formed" and cyst-like. He did have X-Rays and an MRI, both of which were negative. He has also lost a significant amount of weight since XXXXXXX of this year, with no effort on his part, loss of appetite, no fever, and his blood work revealed elevated ANAs, thyroid and his eosinophils are elevated (he first developed eosiniphilia and stopped growing 3 years ago but that was cleared up). Please advise. Both knees are painful every day, right at the kneecap. Current orthopedist is referring him to more physical therapy and seeing a rheumatologist.

Brief Answer:
Needs more evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into the problem I would like to tell you that this could be initial presentation of some kind of autoimmune disease. Since the X rays and MRI are normal bony abnormalities are ruled it could be some effusion in the knees that you may be talking about.

I would like to see all the reports, the titre in which ANA is positive and ENA profile. Plus I would like to know whether XXXXXXX has been done or not. Please provide all the test reports, once I go through them I will have a better understanding of the problem and will be able to guide you better.

If anything you want to tell about his previous history will also be helpful.

Take care.

Dr. Shruti
