This is the report from the radiologist not the doctor
Brief Answer:
sudden onset of pain in normal joint it may be AVN
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing your query.
After going through query, you may very well judge yourself whether you have AVN or not. In that I want to share following information with you.
Knee pain has multiple causes, the most common being osteoarthritis particularly in the older population as you know. However, there are other conditions besides osteoarthritis which can cause pain, such as meniscus tear and ligament injury of the knee, or issues that affect blood circulation in the surrounding bone area, leading to a condition called osteonecrosis or AVN.
When the blood supply is affected the bone becomes weak and may easily break or collapse under normal loading. This surface fracture, called a subchondral fracture, may cause sudden, acute pain in the joint in an otherwise normal joint.
As far as the cause is concern in majority of patients the exact cause of the osteonecrosis is not known; this is referred to as idiopathic AVN. It is more common in women than men 3:1.Those who drink alcohol in excess and patient on long term steroid therapy are prone to develop the AVN, beside patient with sickle cell anaemia, lupus, obesity and thalassaemia.
The typical symptom is sudden onset of pain after minor injury or after routine activity. To diagnose it MRI is the best because in early stages X ray report comes normal.
Hope this Information suffices to make your own judgement.
Take care and I shall be glad to answer any further query.
