Question: I AM 79, WILL BE 80 IN DECEMBER. HAVE HAD PROBLEMS SLEEPING, ESPECIALLY GETTING TOSLEEP; HAVE TAKEN AMBIEN FOR SO LONG IT NO LONGER WORKS AS IT ONCE DID. NOW TAKING HALCION .25 GM. IS THERE ANYTHING BETTER, STRONGER TO TAKE, THESE LAST YEARS OF MY LIFE (MOTHER LIVED TO BE 92). NO SLEEP IS MUCH HARDER TO TAKE THAN WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. CAN YOU SUGGEST MORE OR HIGHER DOSE OF EITHER (AMBIEN WAS 10 MG.) OR A BETTER NEWER DRUG. I HAVE LIKED THE RESULTS OF BOTH THESE MEDS BUT WHAT ELSE? XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Rozerem orally for a short period of time but please consult your doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking in HCM

I can understand your concern.

I am going to give you some info hoping to help you.

Before recommending you another medication the most important thing is to know what's causing your insomnia.

Sometimes it would be an underlying medical or sleep disorder that can be found and its treatment is much more effective than just treating the symptom of insomnia itself.

There are several sleeping pills (benzodiazepines) which should be taken with caution and only after consulting the doctor.

In my experience i would prefer one of them Rozerem orally for a short period of time, once 30 min before sleeping, and because it can not lead to dependence .

But please consult with your doctor for the above.

Usually we do not recommend often these pills.

It would be better too for you to have physical activity (if you can) ,no sleeping in daytime,no alcohol and no smoking .

Take care and feel free to ask me again
