What Causes Light Period With Spotting And Clots?
Question: I am 42 years old. I had spotting for few months and then light period with spotting. I had hormone levels looked at this time and my FSH and hormone readings came out normal. However, two weeks later I started bleeding heavily, with large, consistent clots. My doctor prescribed me Provera 10 mg once a day, which I started taking 7 days into the heavy bleeding. I have taken 3 doses. My bleeding is still showing clots, but smaller ones, and the bleeding is not as heavy. I have an ultrasound scheduled.
Here is my question:
I only have 5 doses of the Provera prescribed. I know stopping it will cause me to bleed (but I didn't realize this when I started taking it to STOP my bleeding), but I haven't even stopped bleeding yet and I'm on my 3rd dose! Should I just quit taking the Provera after these three doses, or ask for a refill? I want to just quit it now, and see what my body does. Is it dangerous to quite Provera after only 3 doses.
For how many days should I request the refill? Is it dangerous to take Provera 10mg longer than 10 days? I don't want not stop taking this right when my period is lightening, only to swing back into bleeding. That doesn't seem right!
I have a call into my doctor but no response yet. Thank you, I also appreciate an additional medical opinion on this.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I read your query and I understand your concerns.
Following is my reply
1. If you stop provera now you will get more heavy bleeding.
2. Ask for a refill and take medicines 10 mg for one week.
3. If bleeding stops make it 5 mg next one week and then stop.
4. Meanwhile get an ultrasound scan done to check fibroid or polyp causing this bleeding.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards

Thank you! I have an ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow.
How many days do think is "average" for my bleeding to completely stop using 10 mg Provera? It has lightrned after 3 doses. Is it being over-anxious to expect to stop during the next couple of days?
Also, assuming I stop bleeding soon, is cervical mucus usually normal when on Provera?

Thank you again.
I have another question... I had PID (as a result of gonorrhea) that I was treated for in XXXXXXX I had a 10-day after treatment test (swab) that eas negative and another test (swab) in August that was negative.
I also have some strange irritations in my pelvic area, which also cause some bladder sensitivity. All testing for infection has been negative, altho I did take UTI meds.
Do you think any of my menstrual problems could be a result or complication of having had gonnorhea/PID? Even though the infection is gone. Can PID scarring cause pelvic irritation/sensitivity or can it cause menstrual changes?

Brief Answer:
No
Detailed Answer:
Hi
It is unlikely that gonorrhoea or PID would cause this.
This is not related to menstrual variations

Thank you again. My general practitioner said the same but yourOB-GYN answer is valuable to me.
Can I or SHOULD I take ibuprofen/NSAID to reduce the bleeding? How much can I reasonably take to reduce bleeding?
(I am currently having some pain too.)

I have taken 4 doses of Provera 10mg and my reargums around some teeth are red and inflamed. Is this a normal side effect? Should I be concerned? My gums are normally VERY healthy.
Brief Answer:
Yes
Detailed Answer:
Hi
These medicines do lead to edema in gums in few women. But inflammation is not a side effect.
Dont worry about it if they are not painful.
