Brief Answer:
Please get ultrasound scan done to know the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello

I read your query and I understand your concerns.

Your age is 50 years which has some peculiar possibily so as to why you have this bleeding on and off. I will try to explain as below:

1) There is possibility of you entering climacteric ( phase of perimenopause) where in this on and off periods continue and periods eventually stop. This is basically because of hormonal deficiency.

2) There is possibility of fibroid or endometrial polyps which cause spotting on and off.

3) There will be irregular shedding of endometrium leading to prolonged cycles.

4) The above possibilities can be easily differentiated by getting an ultrasoound scan done which will diagnose above mentioned problems and there in provide me the help in offering treatment based on the diagnosis.

5) Please get an ultrasound scan done and get back to me with reports.

Regards

in Sept I had a pap done the dr said my uterus was bulky so sent me for U/S
which showed multiple fibroid which I already knew as I have had them for years. The U/S showed the endometrial lining to be 12mm in thickness. This was commented on by the radiographer but not the doctor when I saw her again following the scan. This bleeding isn't a period actually it is almost continuous for 6 weeks now so I suppose I did wish to know if hormones can make this happen

Brief Answer:
progesterone supplimentation required

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for ultrasound scan report. It makes the diagnosis easier.

You have endometrial hypertrophy at 12 mm. This happens due to progesterone hormone deficiency and excess unopposed estrogen. This leads to excessive shedding of endometrium irregularly.

You need to suppliment progesterone hormone for few days. Please get prescription for progesterone hormone for the same.
