What Causes Light Vaginal Spotting?

default
Posted on Sat, 13 May 2017
Question: Hi there,
I am 30 yr old mother of two. No significant medical history however i do have a polyp on my cervix. My question is about spotting.. i have never really had regular periods and since the birth of my son my periods have been significantly heavier. Except this last time i had a period it was really really light spotting for 3 ish days and nothing else. Naturally i took a pregnancy test which was negative. This was about two weeks ago. This am i awoke with the same problem- at least i think its spotting sometimes its heavy enough to notice in the toilet and others i just notice it when wiping, on the tissue and in my discharge (bleh haha). No other symptoms, i know polyps can cause some spotting but this has never happend to me and i am quite concerned. I had a physical and pap in Oct and that came back normal.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
polyp or hormonal disturbances

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,

I have gone through your question and understand the concerns.

Scanty flow in periods can be due to hormonal disturbances or pregnancy.
If the urine pregnancy test is negative, then the pregnancy is ruled out.

Irregular spotting is most likely due to the cervical polyp, however hormonal imbalance like hypothyroidism and hyperprolactinemia.

I will suggest you consult an OBGYN specialist for a repeat internal examination.

If polyp does not seem to be the cause, then thyroid hormones and prolactin hormones levels should be done and further treatment should be done accordingly.

Hope you found the answer helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Do you think i need to be concerned about more serious issues? Such as cancer or pituitary tumor?
I dont have any other symptoms, occasionally the lymph nodes in my groins ache- but ive had this since i was a little girl anytime i get something those lymph nodes ache, and occasionally i feel achy in my pelvic region but only after ive been over analyzing things. I do find i get a little anxious when it comes to my health, but i also know that the most logical answer and likely answer is that its caused by my polyp because i do in fact have a polyp

Brief Answer:
Cancer unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,

Cancer is unlikely as the pap smear was negative 8-10 months ago.

A pituitary tumor is not a possibility as it presents with many other symptoms like headache, visual disturbances, galactorrhea etc.

I suggest you not to worry, and get examined by an OBGYN specialist to confirm the diagnosis.
