What Causes Lightheadedness And Hot Flashes After A Change In Synthroid Dosage?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Aug 2016
Question: I went through radiation of my neck 4 years ago. This past August 2015 my doctor put me on 25 mg of Synthroid. I was rechecked recently and dose was raised to 50 mg, to be rechecked again Aug. 24th. Due to the increase, I have been feeling lightheaded, not very hungry, having hot flashes and feelings of anxiety and sadness. I have been on 50 mg for a week and a half. Should I contact my doctor or wait another week or two to see if perhaps my side effects subside? Maybe I will feel fine once my system adjusts to the increase.

Brief Answer:
Hormone replacement therapy required

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. I understand that you are feeling lightheaded, having hot flushes and other symptoms. But these symptoms are more likely to be due to hormone depletion rather than due to the dose change of synthroid. In fact the hormone depeleted post menopausal state could have direct association with the requirement for the dose modification of synthroid.

I would suggest you to get in touch with a gynecologist or endocrinologist for hormone replacement therapy (HRT). I assure you that the mentioned symptoms are not side effects of the dose modification. Your doctor can certainly confirm on the same.

Feel free to write back in case of further queries.
