What Causes Lightheadedness, Sinus Infection, Dizziness And Tiredness In A Teenager?
Question: My daughter is 16, competes almost year round in high school and competative volleyball. The last two weeks she has complained of light headedness and being out of breath when she exercises or practices. When watching her it is obvious she is struggling. Saw the nurse practitioner twice. First diagnosed with sinus infection, strep was negative, began antibiotic. Sinus’ cleared up but she is still dizzy and tired. Second visit she had her heart checked as well as basic lab work which did not indicate anything out of the ordinary. Continues to have same symptoms. She is supposed to follow up with her MD. but not until Friday. I am very worried about.
Brief Answer:
Asthma in teen suspected.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Considering that her basic examinations like blood work and heart examination is normal I can suspect asthma.
Asthma is a chronic inflammation of airways and lungs triggered by exercises, cold and allergies.
Her doctor should do a spirometry to check lung function ( simple spirometry and after inhaling short acting asthma drug).
It is treated by maintaining treatment
(Inhaled corticosteroids
Long acting beta agonists
Theofiline
leucotrienes.)
Short acting medication like ventoline are used for asthma attack.
