What Causes Lip Swelling Along With Red Itchy Eyes?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Nov 2016
Question: Last night I had an allergy attack to something and started sneezing and my eye got very red and itching. Then I bit my lower lip and realized that it was a bit swollen, which is probably why I bit it. This morning my lower
lip is extremely swollen. The upper lip is fine and I can chew and speak without difficulty. Nothing hurts but my lip looks really awful. I had a peeled apple for dessert and wonder if this could be the cause. At one point in my life I developed a bad allergy to apples but I thought it was only the skin. In the past, when I ate an apple with skin, I started sneezing and itching and my throat feet like it was closing in. That was a long time ago.
What can I do to bring down this lip swelling?

Brief Answer:
antihistamines help with allergic reactions

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

if it's indeed an allergic reaction (it seems so to me) then antihistamines will help. Corticosteroids can be used for prolonged or serious allergic reactions. As serious I would classify the reactions that may - potentially - have dangerous effects like airway swelling, asthma attack, etc. Lip swelling usually accompanies swelling of the internal part of the airway so in patients like you I usually prescribe a short course of corticosteroids too. Clinical examination helps to determine the extent of the reaction.

I hope it helps!

I don't need the names of the ones that don't work for this sort of problem. What are the ones that might work that do not make you sleepy??

Brief Answer:
they do work...

Detailed Answer:
The drugs I've mentioned are appropriate options for this kind of reaction. Why do you believe that they won't work? Any second generation antihistamine will do. Please note that despite their lower risk for sedation, some patients do feel sleepy when taking even the newer antihistamines - most of them don't though.

You mentioned two drugs, desloratadine and bilastine that you said "have little effect," and then asked me, "why do you think that they won't work?" It's
because if they have little effect, there's not much point in taking them!!

I have no idea what a "second generation antihistamine" is, so I have taken one
Allegra tablet and the swelling seems better!

Brief Answer:
I meant "little effect" on sleepiness...

Detailed Answer:
I see... I didn't mean a little effect on allergic reactions, I meant that they don't cause much (if at all) sleepiness. Allegra is an antihistamine and will do the job. It may cause sleepiness but not in most patients. Less than 2% will be affected.
