Brief Answer:
liver transplant
Detailed Answer:
I reviewed the reports and the information provided. It seems like your uncle has all the complications of
cirrhosis. I did not get the reason for his liver disease (many reasons, most commonly alcohol,
hepatitis B,
hepatitis C, etc).
Usually liver transplant is indicated when complications start to develop. Also the priority of
liver transplantation is based on a formula called "MELD" (model for
end stage liver disease). Based on your uncle labs, his MELD score is 19 (normal number <6). A patient qualifies for liver transplant once the MELD score is above 15.
The fact that he has varices in the
esophagus, ascites in the abdomen, high ammonia, anemia, a large spleen, all these are due to his liver disease. The only feared complication that he has not developed is
liver cancer, reasons why he needs serious monitoring of his liver with imaging of the liver every 6 months.
Medications won't cure his disease. They will be able to somewhat help with his symptoms, particularly the fluid in his belly, the memory problems. His list of medications is appropriate, and it seems like his doctors are doing a good job. My advise would be for you to take him to a liver transplant center for evaluation, since a series of testing need to be done to see if he qualifies (his heart and lungs need to be in good shape, no cancers anywhere in the body, etc). I would suggest seeking evaluation somewhere with good experience, wherever they do several liver transplants per year.
Hope that helped, let me know if you have further questions
