What Causes Loss In Sense Of Taste And Smell?
Suggestive of nerve damage.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query.
The taste is controlled by seventh, ninth and tenth cranial nerves, which send impulses to tongue nerves, responsible for our taste sensations. These nerves can get damaged by the viruses causing common cold and also due to diabetes. Partial recovery may occur in some cases, however, it may be delayed upto 2-3 years.
The nerve involved in smell sense (first cranial nerve) is different from taste nerve, and the smell nerve has recovered in your case.
I hope my reply has helped you.
I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
Best wishes,
