What Causes Loss Of Sensation Of Taste While On Terbinafine For Fungal Infection?
Question: I have lost my taste buds . What can cause this.
It has been going on for about 2 weeks. I had taken turbinifine 250 mg
for 6 weeks for a fingernail fungus, but I don't know if this medication would cause this side effect.
This loss of taste occurred during a stressful time . We were moving.

Turbinafine can cause loss of taste sensation but it is very very rare. Very few documented cases. Old age, zinc deficiency and low body mass index are known to be contributing factors.
But first all the other common causes of loss of taste need to be ruled out before pinning the blame on turbinafine.
The most common cause of loss of taste is actually a loss of smell. So please do check if your sense of smell is intact.
Other common causes are dry mouth, cold , flu, smoking, other medicines, nutritional deficiencies, oral or ear surgery, head injury, bad oral hygiene, reflux disease.
Please see a physician to rule out all the causes of loss of taste and also to check your sense of smell.
If at all the loss is because of turbinafine then partial recovery is expected, do not lose hope.
Till then you can take zinc rich foods like walnuts, pistas, cashew and raisins. You can even take zinc supplements like zincovit.
