What Causes Low BP In Elderly People?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Mar 2015
Question: My 92 year old Mother is now having low blood pressure at 97/56. She is a little light-headed and needs to rest. She was making dinner and never fails to complete it. Her BP is usually low but not this low. Can you help? She is usually in good shape for her age. All her doctors tell her so. Has a pacemaker. Has 13 children and 26 grandchildren. Could that be the problem!?? Just kidding(but it is my guess!)
I think it is maybe cabin fever. We have had terrific snow storms the past week and she loves to get out. Athletic most of her life. Thank you. YYYY@YYYY Thank you.

Brief Answer:
don't need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and understand your concern about your mother.

It is common to experience episodes of low blood pressure time to time ,considering her age and the fact that she usually has low blood pressure.
Possible causes include: standing in feet to long, not drinking enough fluids during the day , prolonged bed rest etc.

If these episodes of low blood pressure with symptoms of dizziness and lightheadedness ,are frequent she may need to consult her physician and for evaluation.
Common causes like anemia, bradycardia (low heart rate ),hypoglycemia or Diabetes should be excluded.
If she has low heart rate ,her doctor should see if the problem is the battery of pacemaker .

For the moment you don't need to worry. She should rest ,eat well and drink plenty of fluids. If this doesn't seem to improve ,check her heart rate and if it is to low ,consult her physician.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubts to clarify.I will be happy to assist you further.

Wishing a long healthy life to your mother.
Kind regards,
Dr.Rovena Murati
