What Causes Low PO2 Levels In An Infant?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: My 7 month old has been suffering from a stomach bug for nearly 6 days. We took him to the hospital today and they did blood work. They told us that the blood work overall looked good, but some things indicated a viral infection. They gave us a copy of the blood work but i didn't look at it until i got home. His PO2 levels were listed as "critically low". His level was 45 and i believe it said normal is 80-100. They didn't mention anything about this when we were at the hospital. What could this mean?

Brief Answer:
Please, upload the report for proper interpretation!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about your son’s illness. I will suggest that you upload the report for an independent review. This way, you can get a second opinion and helpful advice. However, low oxygen means the baby was not breathing well. If the baby is breathing well now, then it is already addressed and there is nothing more to worry about but monitor. Also, if the baby still had such persistently low levels, no doctor would have dare to discharge her.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have reviewed the report. This means the baby most likely had breathing difficulties. However, the report seems not total correct as we would have expected increased levels of CO2 in the case of lack of oxygen and it is not the case. For now, simply put an eye on the baby to make sure he’s breathing well.

I wish you well.
