Question: My husband is 64 and takes keppra and depakote for seizure disorder. He is always extremely cold. I have been told his meds have no effect on this. His lab work always comes back within range for thyroid. Any ideas? XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Need his pulse, blood pressure and temperature and clinical history

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

I can understand your concern.

Depending upon balance of individual sympathetic and parasympathetic tone, body temperature varies.

However it is not like that keppra or depakote cannot cause such symptoms. They may cause, but if they cause, it generally occurs after starting the medicines. So I need some details form your side.

Let me know,
since when he is taking keppra and depakote, which dose?

What is his pulse, blood pressure and temperature - in morning, afternoon and night ( If you can measure all these it is good or ask some nurse or doctor to do these)

He is extremely cold means does he feel cold? Or if someone touches him and found him cold? and since when this type of concern is there?

If feasible upload his all lab reports.

Does he have any physical illness other than seizure disorder and if yes any other medicines are going on?

Waiting for your reply.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki

Hello, I do not have access to his lab nor am I able to get his blood pressures. I do know that yesterday at his dr. Visit at 12 pm it was 130 over 70. He takes the keppra and the depakote together. Depakote 1000 mg and keppra 750 upon waking and deakote 1250 mgand keppra 1000 mg to sleep. naproxen 375 mg PRN. For joint aches. He has been on these separately and together for about a year. He "feels" cold, not really cold to touch. I was mainly concerned that it was a reaction from the anti-epilepileptic meds. His previous stress test came out great. I was wondering where to look next, oris it "just"old age?

Brief Answer:
It is due to these medicines but nothing to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hello madam,

thanks for info.

If he is on depakote and keppra both since one year and 2250 mg depakote and 1750 keppra are there, likely possibility of feeling cold is due to these medicines. Studies also show that both these medicines can cause such symptom specifically in people with epilepsy and age above 60.

However it is not at all serious side effect. If person get used to with it gradually adaptation occurs otherwise we need to replace the medicine.
Just ask your husband to discuss with his treating doctor and decide further step.

Hope I have answered your query. If still any query there, I will be happy to answer. If not, you can close the discussion and if feasible give your feedback so I can improve service.
